Adopt a Retired Sled Dog

People often ask what we do with the older dogs. Usually we retire them to live with us in the house if they wish, or to just be loose in the dog yard. We also offer some of these dogs for adoption to loving homes. "Why would you want an older dog?" you might ask. These dogs are long lived. We have 14 year olds still active around the house. By retirement age, which varies from dog to dog, but is generally from 7 to 10 years old, they are not likely to chew up the furniture, rampage the neighborhood or wreck the carpets. They are normally active enough to enjoy a walk or a run every day, but if your schedule is every other day, they can be just fine with that. They are accustomed to living outside, but might love the chance to come inside. Some dogs aren't interested in coming inside. Warm climates are doable. If you can provide shade and water, a kid's playpool, or an air-conditioned area, they do fine. We have a dog happily living in Dallas. Many of these dogs don't have the classic heavy husky coats.

Sometimes we have a younger dog for adoption. Someone for whom pulling a sled with a gang of other dogs holds no thrill. They just don't like the job. These dogs make great pets but need more exercise. Remember, a tired dog is a good dog. Most behavioral problems can be traced to not enough exercise. Probably true for humans too.

Dogs currently available:

Worf is a large (90 lbs.) grey, wolfie looking dog. He is 8 years old. As a sled dog, he usually worked in the wheel position. Several years ago, he blew his knee out (ACL) and had reconstructive surgery. The knee has been sound, but does not extend through the full range. He has rejoined the team and pulled enthusiastically and soundly. I would like to find him a home with an athletic person, where he gets regular runs with less stress than pulling a sled. He is extremely loving.
